Jenny Varteresian, Esq. is a Texas-licensed attorney and experienced R&D tax credit advisor with more than a decade of experience helping companies identify, substantiate, calculate, and defend federal and state research tax incentives.
Her practice focuses on the technical and legal aspects of the R&D credit, including qualification under Internal Revenue Code Section 41, research expense treatment under Section 174, controlled group issues, acquisitions and dispositions, credit utilization, state research incentives, amended claims, audit defense, and the development of defensible substantiation methodologies. She has advised companies across a broad range of industries, with particular experience working alongside engineering, manufacturing, architecture, software, energy, and other technically driven businesses.
Throughout her career, Jenny has worked with closely held businesses, middle-market companies, private equity-backed organizations, CPAs, and national accounting firms on current-year credit studies, amended claims, and complex R&D tax matters. She also has substantial experience representing and supporting clients through federal and state R&D tax credit audits, including responding to information document requests, developing technical and factual support, defending qualified research activities and expenses, and working directly with taxing authorities through examination and resolution.
Her experience extends beyond preparing credit calculations. Jenny regularly evaluates technical project facts, interviews engineering and operational personnel, develops qualification analyses, and helps clients navigate complex filing and entity-structure issues affecting the credit.
Jenny is known for taking a practical, technically rigorous approach to the credit. Rather than treating R&D studies as a purely quantitative exercise, she works to understand how a company actually designs, develops, tests, engineers, and improves its products and processes, and then evaluates those activities against the requirements of the tax law. She places particular emphasis on positions that can be supported not only on a return, but also under examination.
Prior to launching her own tax practice, Jenny worked with national and boutique firms specializing in research tax incentives. She later built an independent R&D practice serving companies and accounting firms across the country. Her work has included federal and multistate credit studies, amended claims, audit defense, Section 174 analysis, technical documentation, and consulting on complex filing and entity-structure issues affecting the credit.
Jenny earned her J.D. from the University of Tulsa College of Law and is based in Austin, Texas.
